AUCKLAND, 9 June 2023 – Fast growing electrical services company Grammar Electrical has today officially announced its purchase of Water Works, an Auckland-based plumbing company with a 31-year history.
“We’re incredibly excited to enter the plumbing trade with this purchase,” says Grammar Electrical owner and Director, Aaron Dempsey.
Since the completion of the purchase in late March 2023, the two companies have been managing logistics around the merger and coordinating their new complementary working relationship, which Dempsey says is progressing well.
As a family-owned business that has operated in Auckland for more than 70 years, Grammar Electrical Limited (GEL) has grown dramatically in recent years to cover everything from small scale residential electrician jobs through to large commercial and mid to high-level construction projects.
Now, with the purchase of Water Works, Dempsey says that excellent infrastructure and back-office capability will enable the company to pursue projects that require efficient interaction between the electrical and plumbing trades.
With today’s official announcement, he also confirms that all Water Works staff have been retained in the purchase and that he expects to bring additional tradespeople and support staff on board in the coming months.
Dempsey says that the single greatest benefit of the merger of these two companies will be in capitalising on their operational synergies.
“Anyone replacing a bathroom or installing a kitchen will tell you that both the plumbing and electrical trades are often required to be on site at the same time, or consecutively, and often one can’t complete a job without the other,” he says.
Both Grammar and Water Works have solid reputations for quality, customer service, and operational excellence, and with that strong alignment, we will work together naturally, saving time both for our customers and our own internal logistics.
Like Water Works, Grammar specialises in maintenance and service work, though in recent years that has grown into projects providing services to some of New Zealand's largest construction companies.
Trades require good quality, trained staff – which both businesses have – but they also require warehousing and resourcing, as well as the latest tools and training. These are things that Grammar excels at.
“What we’re hoping to bring to Water Works is excellent logistics and support that allows our plumbing team to do what they’re best at, with minimal downtime or delay,” he says.
Dempsey is also a firm believer in professional development for team members.
“I believe that supporting employees to develop a specialisation is good for morale and this is only possible in a larger scale business. It takes the paperwork load off the tradesperson and enables them to spend more time on site, improving efficiency and customer experience,” he said.
“The building, construction and renovation businesses continue to operate at full speed in Auckland and Grammar is well positioned to take advantage of these market conditions. Even if this were to change, the company is well underpinned by service and maintenance works,” Dempsey says.
Dempsey says that he’s continuing to look for acquisition opportunities to grow the business and improve efficiencies and is looking forward to making some further announcements on progress with this in the coming weeks.
“Our mandate is simple – we’re looking to buy businesses with verified potential that work within a specialised niche with a high barrier to entry,” he said.
