A sudden voltage spike can damage appliances, electronics, and other equipment in your home. While some surges happen outside your property, others start inside the home's electrical system.
Knowing how to avoid power surges can help protect your home and reduce the chance of costly repairs. A few simple steps can make a big difference.

A power surge is a sudden increase in electrical voltage. Although it lasts only a short time, it can damage sensitive electrical equipment. Large surges may stop appliances from working straight away. Smaller surges can slowly wear down electrical devices over time.
Electrical surges can happen for several reasons.
Common causes include:
Some causes are outside your control, but others can be reduced with proper electrical care.
There are several ways to lower the risk of electrical damage.
Surge protection helps stop excess voltage from reaching your appliances and electronics. A whole-home surge protection device protects your electrical system and offers broader protection than using individual plug-in devices.
Old or damaged wiring can increase the risk of electrical problems. Regular electrical maintenance helps identify worn parts before they become serious safety issues. It also keeps your electrical system working safely and efficiently.
Damaged electrical cables should never be ignored. If wiring becomes worn or damaged, it should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. This helps reduce the risk of electrical faults and protects your home.
Lightning is one of the most common causes of large electrical surges. If severe weather is expected, unplug valuable electronics until the storm has passed. This simple step can help prevent unnecessary damage.
Using too many high-powered appliances on one circuit places an extra demand on your electrical system. Spread electrical loads across different circuits whenever possible. This helps reduce strain on the system.
If electrical problems happen often, your home may need professional attention.
Contact an electrician if you notice:
An electrician can inspect your electrical system and identify the cause before the problem becomes worse. If an electrical fault creates an immediate safety risk, an emergency electrician can respond quickly and restore safe operation.

Regular inspections help identify hidden electrical problems before they cause damage.
An electrician can:
Routine inspections improve safety and help keep your home protected.
You cannot stop every electrical surge, but you can reduce the risk of damage. Surge protection, regular electrical maintenance, and a well-maintained electrical system all help protect your home and valuable electronics.
If electrical problems happen often, do not ignore them. A professional inspection can identify the cause and help keep your home's electrical system safe and reliable.
Keeping your electrical system in good condition is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of electrical damage. Professional inspections can identify problems early and help protect your home.
