Outdoor garden lighting can transform pathways, highlight garden features, and make outdoor spaces safer and more inviting. Whether you want to brighten a walkway, showcase your plants, or improve visibility at night, learning how to install garden lights helps you understand what goes into a safe, effective lighting system.
This guide explains the different types of lights, how professionals handle installing garden lights, and what to consider when choosing solar garden lights or wired fixtures for an energy-efficient outdoor setup.

Garden lighting does more than improve aesthetics. With the right approach, you can:
Whether you choose wired fixtures or outdoor solar options, a thoughtful lighting layout instantly upgrades your outdoor environment.
Before installing garden lights, it helps to understand the main types of outdoor lighting and how each one performs.
Wired Garden Lights
Best for:
These lighting fixtures are connected to your home’s electrical system and should be installed by a registered electrician to ensure safety and compliance.
Solar Garden Lights
Best for:
Although solar units seem easy to install, the correct placement of solar panels is important for performance. Understanding how to install solar garden lighting helps you choose the right spots, even if a professional handles the setup.
Common types of solar lighting include:
These options allow you to add more lights later as your lighting system expands.
If you want long-lasting, bright outdoor lighting, wired fixtures are a dependable choice. Here’s what installation typically involves when handled by a professional:
1. Plan the lighting layout
An electrician will walk through your garden, identify dark areas, and select the best placement for each fixture to highlight garden features and outdoor spaces.
2. Dig a trench for cabling
Low-voltage lighting systems use underground cabling. A shallow trench (around 10-15 cm) is dug, and conduit is placed to protect wiring and keep the lighting system compliant with NZ standards.
3. Position and mount the lights
Each fixture is mounted securely using stakes or clips. Properly mounting the lights ensures safe, consistent coverage without glare.
4. Connect the wiring
The electrician will connect the wiring according to the manufacturer’s instructions and electrical safety regulations. This step ensures the lighting system operates safely and remains compliant with New Zealand standards.
5. Test the lights
Once connected, the electrician will power the system and test the lights, adjusting angles, brightness, and spacing until everything is performing as it should.
A registered electrician ensures every part of the lighting installation meets safety standards and delivers long-lasting performance.

Solar garden lights are popular because they’re energy-efficient and versatile. Here’s how installing solar lights is handled safely and correctly:
1. Choose locations with sunlight
A professional ensures each solar panel gets strong daylight and avoids shaded areas.
2. Assemble the lights
The installer assembles each solar fixture securely to ensure it withstands garden conditions.
3. Stake lights into the ground
Lights are placed carefully to avoid breaking stakes and to keep them stable across varying soil conditions.
4. Turn the switch ON
Many fixtures include a small activation switch. The installer makes sure each light is functioning correctly.
5. Let them charge
Solar lights need several hours of sunlight to reach full brightness. Proper placement ensures long-lasting, even lighting across your outdoor spaces.
